About Doshas – Ayurveda & Our Approach
Welcome to Doshas.co.uk, an independent UK website dedicated to making Ayurveda easier to understand.
Our purpose is to explain the traditional principles of Ayurveda, particularly Vata, Pitta and Kapha, and explore how they relate to food, herbs and everyday lifestyle choices.
We combine traditional Ayurvedic knowledge with modern nutritional research, explaining what is established, what remains uncertain and where further evidence is needed.
🌿 What Is Doshas.co.uk?
Doshas.co.uk was created to help people understand Ayurveda without becoming overwhelmed by complicated terminology or exaggerated health claims.
Ayurveda originated in India and has developed over thousands of years. Its traditional approach considers individual constitution, diet, digestion, daily routines and the relationship between people and their environment.
Central to this system are three doshas:
- Vata: Associated with air and space, movement and change.
- Pitta: Associated with fire and water, heat and transformation.
- Kapha: Associated with earth and water, structure and stability.
These are traditional Ayurvedic concepts, not scientifically established biological classifications.
Understanding their traditional meanings is the starting point for exploring Ayurveda properly.
👤 Who Is Behind Doshas?
Doshas.co.uk was founded by Stuart Kelly, a qualified nutritionist and Ayurveda herbalist based in Worcestershire, England.
Stuart holds a Diploma in Ayurveda, qualifications in Diet and Nutrition, and is a Practitioner Member of the Complementary Medical Association (MCMA).

His approach is grounded in explaining health and nutrition in ordinary language, drawing on traditional herbal knowledge while recognising the importance of modern scientific evidence.
Stuart also runs Body in Harmony Products, where he writes about nutrition, digestion, herbs and practical approaches to everyday health.
Doshas.co.uk focuses specifically on Ayurveda, the three doshas and the relationship between traditional food classifications and modern ingredients.
🔬 Traditional Ayurveda and Modern Research
Traditional use and scientific evidence are not the same thing.
Ayurveda has an extensive history of classifying foods, herbs and individual constitutions. However, many traditional explanations have not been established through modern clinical research.
For example, a 2025 review published in Frontiers in Medicine examined 94 studies investigating Ayurvedic constitutional assessments.
The researchers identified 64 different assessment tools, but only 20 had undergone any form of validation. They concluded that further work is needed to establish the reliability and clinical usefulness of these assessments.
That distinction matters.
We can explain how Ayurveda traditionally interprets food and constitution without claiming that these classifications are proven medical measurements.
Our aim is to present the information accurately and allow readers to understand both the tradition and the evidence.
🧘 Discover Your Ayurvedic Constitution
One of the first things people encounter when learning Ayurveda is the concept of Prakriti, or natural constitution.
Our free Ayurvedic dosha quiz introduces this concept through 15 questions covering physical characteristics, appetite, digestion, energy, sleep and temperament.
The results display the proportion of answers associated with Vata, Pitta and Kapha, alongside explanations of their traditional characteristics.
The quiz is an educational self-assessment, not a medical diagnostic test.
📱 The Ayurvedic Ingredient Scanner
We’re also developing an Ayurvedic Ingredient Scanner.
The aim is to help people explore how ingredients found in everyday packaged foods are traditionally classified in Ayurveda.
Users will be able to select their dosha profile and examine ingredient lists, receiving explanations based on traditional Ayurvedic food principles.
The scanner is being developed as an educational tool rather than a medical or nutritional diagnostic system.
📚 Explore Our Ayurveda Blog
Our Ayurveda Blog explores traditional herbs, spices, food choices, digestion and emerging scientific research.
Articles aim to explain not only what Ayurveda traditionally recommends, but also why those recommendations were made and whether modern evidence supports them.
We believe useful health information should be understandable, properly explained and free from exaggerated promises.
🌱 Our Approach
Doshas.co.uk is built around a straightforward principle: respect traditional knowledge, examine the evidence and explain both clearly.
Ayurveda offers an established body of traditional knowledge worth studying. Modern research provides methods for investigating its claims, identifying limitations and understanding potential risks.
We believe both deserve careful consideration.
Our aim is to help readers understand Ayurveda and make more informed decisions, without confusing traditional constitutional theories with established medical science.
