🌿 What Is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine originating in India, with roots stretching back thousands of years. Its name comes from two Sanskrit words: Ayus, meaning life, and Veda, meaning knowledge or science.
Ayurveda takes an individual approach to health. It considers a person’s constitution, digestion, food choices, daily routines and surrounding environment rather than focusing on individual symptoms alone.
Central to this philosophy are three principles known as the doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Understanding these traditional concepts provides a foundation for exploring Ayurvedic diet, lifestyle and the wider principles of Ayurveda.
🍃 Understanding the Three Doshas
In Ayurveda, everyone possesses a combination of three doshas. Their relative proportions are traditionally believed to influence a person’s physical characteristics, temperament and responses to food and environmental conditions.
Vata — Movement and Change
Associated with air and space, Vata represents movement within the Ayurvedic system. Its qualities include lightness, dryness, coldness and mobility.
Pitta — Heat and Transformation
Associated with fire and water, Pitta represents transformation, including the traditional Ayurvedic understanding of digestion and metabolism. Its qualities include heat, sharpness and intensity.
Kapha — Structure and Stability
Associated with earth and water, Kapha represents structure, stability and cohesion. Its qualities include heaviness, coolness, moisture and steadiness.
These are traditional classifications rather than three scientifically established physiological systems.
🌱 The Fundamental Principles of Ayurveda
Ayurveda is built around several interconnected ideas that describe how individuals interact with food, lifestyle and their environment.
The Five Elements — Pancha Mahabhuta
Earth, water, fire, air and space form the traditional framework used to describe different qualities in nature and the human body.
Individual Constitution — Prakriti
Prakriti refers to a person’s underlying Ayurvedic constitution, traditionally understood through their particular combination of doshas.
Digestive Fire — Agni
Agni represents the body’s capacity to digest and transform food within Ayurvedic theory. Strong or weakened Agni is traditionally used to describe differences in digestion and nourishment.
The Six Tastes — Shad Rasa
Sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent tastes are used in Ayurvedic dietary planning. Each is associated with qualities believed to influence the doshas.
These principles work together to form Ayurveda’s traditional approach to personalised food and lifestyle choices.
⚖️ Where East Meets West: Ayurveda and Modern Science
Ayurveda and modern medicine developed from different ways of understanding health.
Ayurveda traditionally describes people through constitutional patterns, food qualities and the balance of the doshas. Modern nutritional science examines measurable processes such as nutrient absorption, enzyme activity, metabolism and the body’s physiological responses to food.
There are areas of shared interest, particularly the importance of nutrition, sleep, physical activity and individual differences.
However, similarities do not establish that Ayurvedic explanations and modern biological mechanisms are equivalent.
A useful starting point is the research review A Glimpse of Ayurveda – The Forgotten History and Principles of Indian Traditional Medicine. Published in 2017, it examines the historical development of Ayurveda, its traditional concepts and how these differ from other systems of medicine. It provides valuable background for understanding Ayurveda, although it does not establish the clinical effectiveness of individual Ayurvedic treatments.
At Doshas, our aim is to explain traditional Ayurvedic knowledge clearly while examining what modern research can — and cannot — tell us.

🌿 Meet the Practitioner Behind Doshas
I’m Stuart Kelly, a qualified nutritionist, Ayurvedic herbalist and CMA-registered practitioner.
My interest lies in understanding how traditional Ayurvedic teachings can be examined alongside what we know about human nutrition and physiology.
I created Doshas.co.uk as an independent educational resource where I can share that knowledge, question established ideas and encourage a better understanding of Ayurveda without exaggerated claims.
